To me it seems that religion is a way for people to answer the great unknowns in life. How else do people cope with these questions? Obviously there are answers like science, but are there other ways as well?
In western language our ideas are often limited dichotomous choices, like a scientific explanation based on observation and group analysis of the observed data and one in which unverifiable stories are used every and any which way to inspire certainty in certain realms of thought such as life, death, the theories of existence and the process or what have you of coming to existence.
These dichotomous constructs may be a fundamental limit or at leased barrier to a more accurate perception.
our perceptions are limited in many fundamental ways, easy ones such as infrared beams, detecting certain complex electromagnetic signals like hammer head sharks can, various sounds frequencies and there are likely to be many other inconceivable limitations to humans perceptions.
Whether via nature or nurture (more specifically the way we are taught) general or collective human thought relays on the importance of certainty.
The answers about the Great Unknowns are made "certain" by religion, whether the religious txt explicittly expains or interpretations are derived.
Where as the science of today attempts to shed light on the likely reasons for things as well as they likely outcomes of various answers. most likely as based on the limitations of human thinking combined limitations of modern technology.
However these ideas are distorted more likely than not by those unswayed by religious certainty to adopt beliefs in scientific "truths" "facts" which to our best observations are the closet things we have to facts besides pure mathematics
I believe there is one more answer between coping with the unknowns instead of finding certainty with religion or science we could assume that their is a degree of likeliness for any outcome.
Whether it be the small degree of likeliness you will be struct by lightning or the more subjective/objective conclusions about the likelihood our ends being of heaven or the recycling of organic and eventually non organic material throughout the world and universe.
It is difficult for people to cope without certainty in dichotomies especially science and religion.
